RA experience important for PhD admissions?

A question to the list about admissions to economics PhD programs in the US:
Is experience with economics research, for example being a Research
Assistant to a professor, very valuable in strengthening a student's
application to a PhD program? Is it particularly important for
students seeking to enter graduate school straight from undergraduate
school? I imagine it must have some value; but I wonder if it's as
crucial (or nearly as crucial) as it seems to have become in the
natural sciences (according to my wife the research scientist). I
ask not only to advise students in general more accurately, but also
because it might influence my current RA search. - Akira
