The Armchair Economist (Steven Landsburg, Free Press). A bit over the top
for those with liberal leanings, but Landsburg does a superb job of hitting
the intuitions of economics without using a single graph or equation.
Also try Eat the Rich (P.J. O'Rourke). O'Rourke (not an economist) travels
the world attempting to answer the question of why some countries are rich
and others are poor.

Colleagues,
A bright, enthusiastic student who has just completed introductory
economics comes up to you, the professor, and asks you to recommend an
economics book (or books) for reading over the summer. What do you
suggest?
Thanks,
