Campus culture

Each semster as I begin my courses I make sure I use examples that my students
can relate to. Obviously it keeps them interested and more willing to learn to
try to apply what we are talking about. My question is this:

As I have tten older, I need to do more "homework" on what is popular among my
students. Does anyone use a "campus culture" type of survey at the beginning
of the semester to assess what the students are into these days? Or does
anyone use another method to come up with this information? Instead of
designing a questionairre, obviously I would love to use an approach that has
already been proven.

Thanks for any info you can provide.
