Our economics department (West Georgia College) has maintained a
strong EFT, despite dropping business school enrollment, in part by
offering an applied "Consumer Economics" class good only for elective
credit. The instructor has heavily promoted the class (by visiting
other classes on campus). He has attracted students by using
Internet resources in the class. He also invites many guest
speakers. I don't know the GPA for this class but it is clearly
higher than the average economics class. This summer, over 100
students signed up for the class. For our department, the strong
enrollment in this class has allowed us to offer standard upper
division classes and not worry so much about enrollment. This
applied class has not impacted our "standards" in that majors cannot
get credit for this class (except as an elective). A key to the
success of this class has been the marketing effort of the instructor.
