The Univ. of Manitoba (where I did my grad. work) had an
interesting twist on this that I was reminded of by several of
the other responses: a regular 4-point scale mark was assigned,
but + grades could be indicated on transcripts. The + marks were
only used by the university when calculating scholarship and
fellowship awards. At that point, an additional .5 was added
when a + appeared. Thus, a student with two A+'s and two A's
would beat out a student with four A's for a scholarship.
As a graduate student, I know the + system significantly affected
my performance, because I wanted to make sure I won university-
wide scholarship competitions. I don't know how successful it
would be at the undergraduate level, however.
